Meet Suzanne

I'm an eclectic when it comes to style. Western, goth, minimalist, vintage, glam, retro, I love it all.

My editing assistant is a Doberman who thinks he's a lap dog. For Vegas standards, I'm a native; I've been here since I was 10 years old, and am originally from Ventura, CA.

My professional journey began as a police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. I started as a volunteer Explorer at 17 years old. Being a police officer was a dream come true. I felt like I was born to do it; being the level head and calm during intense situations, being the guiding figure when people didn't know where to turn, literally chasing down the bad guy. It was an immensely rewarding and demanding career. Years of major events took a toll on me mentally though. At 37 years old, as much as I didn’t want to give it up, I knew doing so was the best thing for my health and family. When thinking about what to pursue next, I knew it couldn't be ordinary.

Photography had always been a love and hobby since I was a little girl. I grew up with a Vivitar film point-and-shoot and disposable cameras that I got developed at Costco. Later, I had one of the first clunky digital cameras with absolutely horrendous picture quality. For a while, my go-to was a tough, waterproof camera that I took on mud runs and other adventures in my 20’s. Then, during the age of smartphones, I brought myself to invest in a mirrorless camera... which stayed on the auto setting. It never crossed my mind to pursue photography professionally. For my husband though, it was a no-brainer, and when he suggested it, it felt right. It was one of the few things in my life that pre-dated my love of policing, and it gave me such a feeling of freedom.

So, I took the leap and flipped the switch from auto to manual.

All I had was a self-proclaimed eye for photography and a many-years-old, stock Sony camera. Zero technical knowledge, no fancy gear, no business experience. I did have a couple things working for me though - a stepdaughter who has a knack for modeling, and a huge network of friends/family with the police department.

Thus began a very intimate relationship with Google, YouTube, and Instagram. I'm thankful for all the other artists out there who share their experience and ideas, so that people like me can learn and continue to spread the art of photography. I am currently pursuing a photography certificate through the University of Washington.

My focus area is portraiture. I also love nature and traveling, so those photos sneak their way in, but people are what make life worth living. Being a police officer gave me countless first-hand experiences of how short and fragile life is. Photographs freeze time; I am not just capturing how someone looked, I’m capturing the emotion being felt, the memory that surrounds that moment. When the person involved with that photo sees it, they’re given the opportunity to travel back in time to not just visualize the moment, but feel it. There’s nothing like a photograph. I want to give you something that you can proudly display on the walls of your home and pass down for generations.
